The Books – A Cold Freezin’ Night

Listening to a an old Portishead mixtape they put out right before an I’ll Be Your Mirror event they curated in 2011, I came across a track by The Books I totally missed out on.

“A Cold Freezin’ Night” is comprised of scraps of two children talking into tapes, a boy and a girl, and we daresay it expresses burgeoning feminist anger—the boy, untethered and proud, screams about “a cold freezin’ night” triumphantly, while the girl, miserable with rage, sighs, I wish I was a boy, in addition to delivering a short uninhibited treatise Valerie Solanas could totally get down with. – thefader.com

The track premiered on Fader back in 2010, but is still available for download. Oh, Boy.

In about two weeks  Spring Offensive embark on an extensive European tour  and yesterday they released a new single, Not Drowning but Waving. Watch it below:

Crystalised

Mark Lanegan, Martina Topley Bird and members of Warpaint take on Crystalised by The XX (and have Massive Attack producing the whole thing). Brilliant.

First Aid Kit – When I Grow Up (Fever Ray Cover)

First Aid Kit bring some haunting country twang to Karin Dreijer Andersson’s original.

Regina Spektor – No Surprises (Radiohead Cover)

In 2010, Regina Spektor took on the Radiohead classic No Surprises and stripped the song down to its core: piano, vocals and very discreet string arrangement.  I guess the track is still available on iTunes with all the proceedings going to Doctors Without Borders.

Efterklang – Hollow Mountain

I already blogged the album trailer for Efterklang’s forthcoming album Piramida and now they shared the video for the album’s opening track Hollow Mountain. The video was created and directed by Oodls and features the band’s own photos from the trip to Piramida as well as bits and pieces of the album artwork.

With more and more infos on how this album came together, anticipation for the release is rising –  at least on my side of the desk.

In August 2011 we (Mads, Casper & Rasmus) travelled to Spitsbergen in the arctic. Our destination was the abandoned Russian settlement Piramida. It was left overnight in 1998 and today stands as a ghost town still full of relics from its past including the world northernmost grand piano. We spent 9 days in this ruin just a 1000 km from the North Pole and we collected over a 1000 recordings which we afterwards have used in different ways in the making of our new album.
